OKm wifey has booked plane tickets, hotel and rental car in San Diego in March.

Is there anywhere in the area I can rent a decent bike for a week and if so - where can I ride?

Thanx,

Yes, some rentals here and plenty of places to ride.

Link to a list of San Diego LBS:

California Bicycle Inc rents, located in La Jolla:

Also Bike Tours San Diego: but I think only cruisers
http://www.bikecab.com/HTML/SD/rentals.html

You could start there and maybe they could be more specific about where to rent a performance bike if that is what you are looking for. Also good local bike maps are available at nearly all bike shops in San Diego for free courtesy of our local commuting programs.

As for riding you can't go wrong in San Diego, a ride North along the coast or nearly anywhere inland will be most excellent. Just found this site for local routes:

Good luck and feel free to request more info.

Call B&L Bikes...

at (858) 481-4148 and talk to Dan Rock in service. He is the most helpful person I've ever dealt with. He may have something, or will most assuredly know where to rent a performance bike.

Last summer I rented a Felt Road bike at Nytro in Encinitas. I got a ride up there from SD and was able to take a bus back after returning it. Torrey Pines on the PCH is fun. So was Mt Soledad. The guys at Nytro were helpfull. As a bonus I ended up riding with Team Balance Bar adventure race team. They showed me a bike trail up by Ocean Beach. I even rode with Ned Overend for a few miles as he was returning to his hotel. He was in town for the Muddy Buddy race.

Try Discovery Bicycles - ask for BK

There is a Trek, Motobecane, Mercier, Electra dealer down by the beach -- I rented a used bike from a guy named BK there once -- I had to ask, but he did it
