The new Canyon Ultimate CF EVO 10.0 LTD comes with Lightweight Meilenstein wheels, SRAM Red eTap wireless electronic drivetrain, and THM Clavicula M³ crankset with built-in SRM powermeter. Price is 13,000 Euro (or about $14,000).
The ultra-light road bike realm has a new entrant. Meet the Canyon Ultimate CF EVO road racer, which has a claimed frame weight of 665g, a wispy 270g carbon fork, and two very high-end builds that can peg total bike weight under 11 pounds. You read that right, under 11 pounds.
Of course all that lightness will cost you. U.S. pricing is not available yet (Canyon will launch here this coming summer). But European pricing for the Ultimate CF EVO 10.0 LTD with Lightweight Meilenstein carbon wheels, SRAM Red eTap wireless electronic drivetrain, and THM Clavicula M³ crankset with built-in SRM powermeter is listed at 13,000 Euro (or about $14,000).
Opt for the lighter Ultimate CF EVO 10.0 SL and you get standard SRAM Red shifting, THM Fibula brakes with Tune brake shoes, and the same Lightweight Meilenstein for $10,800. Frame only is about $3560 which is on par with other flyweights such as Trek's 690-gram Emonda and Cervélo's 667-gram RCA.
Canyon says the Ultimate CF EVO hit its ultra-light weight numbers thanks to an extensively optimized layup, consisting of ultra-high modulus pitch-based fibers that actually required special permission from the Japanese Ministry of Defense to access.
Read the RoadBikeReview review of the Canyon Aeroad CF SLX 9.0 SL.
Previously, the Ultimate CF SLX had represented the height of Canyon's road bike engineering, chasing the unicorn of stiffness-to-weight, compliance, and aerodynamic efficiency. During the development of the fourth-generation Ultimate CF SLX, Canyon engineers explored the potential of raising the bar of frameset performance, which led to the Ultimate CF EVO. But Canyon says the Ultimate CF EVO is more than just an ultra-lightweight road bike. "It is a statement," read a PR release. "It is proof of Canyon's curiosity and commitment to pushing the limits of road bike technology and innovation in their pursuit of engineered perfection."
If shaving maximum weight is your goal, the Canyon Ultimate CF EVO 10.0 SL is a solid choice with a claimed weight of just under 11 pounds.
Lots of hyperbole there, but it's hard to argue with the raw numbers - or the dead sexy appeal of these two builds. Yes, we'd love to test one, thank you.
