Looking for some opinions here. I'm interested in buying a few years old high end carbon fiber road bike to save some coin over a newer one. I recently found a Trek Madone with mostly Dura Ace with approximately 10,000 miles on it. When is a good quality like Trek carbon fiber frame going to show fatigue? What are the signs? How many miles should make it a "pass" decision over a "buy" decision if the price is fair?

I have an '05 Bianchi full carbon that I've put about 6000 miles on a year and it still going strong. I crashed it pretty hard a few weeks back so I'm pulling the wheels and forks apart weekly to check for cracks in the finish or an increase in the flexing in the stays. If the Trek only has 10,000 miles and its never been crashed, I'd say its probably in good shape.

"how many miles is too many?" That would be just as the frame fails. Otherwise, your question is the equivalent of "how long is a piece of string?" 10K miles, unless the bike was crashed a lot or defective from the factory, should not be an issue on any well built bike.

64,200 miles is too many for a carbon frame.
89,400 for steel

even with proper care i dont think a carbon frame will last you a lifetime, thru wear and tear, i believe half a lifetime is appropriate. hahahaha
Similar to calculating the half life, then you'll have an answer. :D This is one of the great bicycle mysteries.
