no twigs, no bent hanger, no limit screw issues, no shifting under load, no kinks in chain....ugh.

Sorry, but... I can't believe it wasn't one of those things. And if I had to hazard a guess, I would say it was a "limit-screw issue," or otherwise to a poor state (or accuracy) of tune. Derailleurs generally don't just fall in love with spokes, get tired of being just derailleurs, and then one day, whilst in your biggest cog, decide in a fit of component carnality they can't stand their lust any more and just must make some derokes.

But it looks like your hanger survived, no? I can't tell from the pictures, but it doesn't even look bent! Or not that bent, anyway... Too bad, though, that that pretty carbon cage had to serve as a break-away bolt.

I can't believe it wasn't one of those things either. and you're correct, the hanger remained straight. no spokes were hit, either.
