Anyone riding a Centurion Ironman? From, say 1987? That was my 1st road bike and I’m wondering if it was as good as I remember. Could just be sentimental, but I keep thinking I’d like to find another to rebuild (if necessary).

It's metaphysically impossible for us to know what you remember, but they were "good" bikes but certainly not great bikes. Any desire to rebuild one of these indeed would be sentinmental.

“It’s metaphysically impossible”. I guess that’s about as immature a statement as I expected. If you’d actually read the post, bike snob, it said “I’m wondering”. Based on your experiences riding one and ‘your’ description of those experiences, I would draw any correlation with ‘my’ memories.

You know, I joined this forum just a week ago and from perusing a variety of posts over that period, I’ve read a great deal of comments from absolute ‘azzholes’. Such arrogance and pretension. I’m reminded why I quit bike forums in the past. As I will this one.

Not a Firesign Theater fan? Sorry you are so sensitive. When you're "wondering if it was as good as I remember" what possible answer could you get. Some people love their old bikes out of nostalgia and impose that nostalgia on how the bike rides. Are you just looking for people who agree with your memory? I have ridden one of those and I'll repeat: they were "good" bikes but certainly not great bikes.

"metaphysically" it was as good as you remember. In the real world, in comparison to new bikes, it is not as good as other offerings. Ask yourself, what was the largest tire I could put on it, what is the range of the gearing, what is the lowest gear I could get for that big steep long hill? And would it even be possible to put a 'modern' groupo on it?
If you were going to hang it on the wall, I would say go for it.

What is immature or arrogant about @Kerry Irons' statement? Granted there are some azzholes on these forums, but Kerry isn't one of them. He didn't say anything that could be perceived as insulting or offensive.

My position is that "classic" bikes, just like classic cars might bring a feeling of nostalgia to see them. If you owned a 1961 T-bird, you may feel nostalgic about one. But if you drove or owned any of these classic cars today, you would realize that the "good old days" really weren't so good.
