Couple weeks ago I scored some used Williams 58 carbon clinchers and proceeded to install my 10-spd sram cassette. I noticed the free body had some scuffs and the cassette needed some effort to slide over the spline. After the install all the gears shifted perfectly until I got to the small cog and big crank combo. I heard this noise and thought the chain was skipping, upon visual inspection at a specific point the lower pulley goes under tension then springs back to it's normal operating position.

My thoughts are could the free body be damaged and the cassette still isn't seated all the way and that's causing the problem? or do I need to just reinstall the rear derailleur and start from square one?

Any input and help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

A specific point how? Like you're turning the cranks and the pulley jumps at some point? That would be a link that's either stiff or about to fail more than likely

That's exactly what happens, couldn't find the right words to describe it but yes, the pulley jumps. However, it doesn't jump in any other cog, only on the smallest, if there is a stiff link wouldn't that jump be consistent all across the gears?

Not necessarily. I had the same issue with a link seperating but it only happened in the 6th cog initially. As the chain worsened, it became an issue in all of them. If not that, then I'd try setting the lower limit screw to allow the pulley to swing to the outside of the 10th cog by just a hair, say the inside of th pulley lines up with the outside of the cog.

Mine too was a SRAM chain, either a 1070 or 1050, I don't remember which. It was almost brand new, but I screwed up installing it and made it too short. I just assumed it came apart where I had spliced it back together with the old pin (apparently a big no-no)

Did you end up getting another new SRAM chain or going a different route? When I first put the bike together I took it to my LBS for inspection and they shortened the chain for me accordingly, so I am assuming the did it properly.

I got another SRAM chain. I've only had that one issue with them after 3 years on their group

Okay so I checked the chain and it seems fine, so I started messing with the H limit screw and lo and behold it was too tight after a few 1/4 turns no more jumpey pull sweetness. Now if only I could figure out how to dial in the SRAM FD, those things are really temperamental.
