In the recent Bicycling magazine I was looking at their reviews of commuter bikes. Some of the bikes had a crankset or chainring that has a groove in it to protect your pants legs from getting caught in the chain. The chain actually sits down inside the chianring and isn't exposed. Anyone know the technical term for these? I am building up a commuter and might want to look into getting one. Any technical issues (aside from weight) with using these?

Another option; REI has desert gaiters that strap over your ankle/lower calf for hiking in weeds or grass, but they also work to cinch up your pants from about mid calf down.
