I'm building up a cadd 8 frame with campy veloce shifters. I am trying to decide on a compact crank that is affordable. pbk has good deals on veloce compact cranks. I'm open to any make of compact. Any body have good/bad experience with some of the more affordable compacts? Rival, Shimano R700, FSA (ebay) energy or slk, or campy. Thanks.

I've run an FSA Gossamer (ext BB version, ~ $150) for 4000+ miles on my back-up (bad weather) bike & its been OK. Reliable through road grit & mud, although the chainrings are now showing some wear. Also have ~1000mi on Shimano R-700 (Ultegra level) on my main bike. R-700 is more nicely finished and shifts more crisply, but it's more $$ too (Shimano usu. charges BB separately- check with retailer if BB inc. in quoted price).

I've seen Centaur square taper (old style) compacts, some NIB, on eBay for considerably less than $200. Nice option if you want to stay Campy.

pbk has veloce compact UT cranks for about 120 and BB are only 15. I think centaur is only about 15 dollars more. i haven't been able to find many reviews about the veloce/centaur allow cranks though. Any experience with those?

Check Ebay. I just bought a Veloce UT crankset with the UT cups for $110.00 from ediscountbike.com. I don't work for them, I'm just a happy customer. The Veloce is alloy (silver), but from what I've read, it is the same as Centaur.
