Valverde and Freire are the RR captains without a doubt so his chances of even having an opportunity in that race are slim to none. Even Samuel Sanchez has a better chance in the RR. Does this guy really think he has a chance in the TT? Top 15 if he's lucky. Great rider, but in the grand scheme of things he's a mediocre time trialist who'll be going head to head with the specialists.

Maybe he's just being humble? I can see him putting aside his personal ambitions in the road race to support Valverde. I can even see Sastre and Freire working for Valverde to ensure Spain gets the gold. It would certainly be a sweet victory for Spain to get 2 TDF jersey's plus a gold medal in the same year.

Or realistic? Contador even on top form wouldn't be a good bet vs. Valverde in a hard one-day race, and based on him being unable to make the final selection at San Sebastian, he's not even in top form.

I don't think Contador has any kind of sprint worth talking about so he'd have to get rid of all of the other likely protagonists; Rebellin, Bettini, Schumacher. Valverde just has to be there with them to have a realistic shot.

Bingo. Valverde is the real deal when it comes to one day races, much like Contador is for 3 week tours. That's where they need to keep their focus on.

As for the TT, I can't imagine Contador would beat any of the favorites, however stranger things have happened.

He MIGHT place 3rd. Unlikely but a top 5 is possible I think.

Top 10, definitely.

Cancellara, Schumacher, Millar. Is Kloden riding the TT?

When is cycling? I have 6 Olympic channels on cable here.

its a climbers dream...I think he's got a shot at top 5, especially with his thin racing schedule as of late..
Have you read the long thread about the Olympic RR? It will most likely be a small group uphill sprint. Think LBL or Amstel Gold. Contador doesn't win this type of race (and for the team USA fans neither does Levi, VDV, etc.). As said before Valverde owns this type of race and will continue to for the next seven or eight years like Bettini before him unless he gets popped for doping.

Getting top 5 in the Olympics is nice but when you're a teammate of the overwhelming race favorite, you sacrifice your own ambition to help your teammate even if like Contador you might be able to finish at the back of the front group.

He's not a realistic medal hopeful in either event and he's probably there to tune up for the Vuelta, but you can't come out and say that.
