Spaniard controls field with patience and efficiency...and World's lightest gruppo

Alberto Contador (Astana) made no mistake of the fact that he is in it to win it. The newly crowned 2010 Paris-Nice champion and SRAM RED rider knows that 2010 is a proving year where he will face stronger challengers than ever before on his quest to another Tour de France title.

Contador's second stage race win of the year (Tour of the Algarve) was his second Paris-Nice victory. With controlled aggression, time gains on critical climbs, and minding his challengers during the latter stages, Contador demonstrated control and patience, managing the race perfectly.

The Spaniard has long stated that his SRAM RED, easily the lightest road gruppo in the World offering best in class ergonomics, improved his climbing. Contador also races the time trials on the innovative 1090 R2C (return to center) aero shift levers.

The oldest rider in the race, 38 year old Jens Voigt (Saxo Bank), captured the leader's yellow jersey mid-week, finishing well from a small group that was the remnants of the peloton after a searing Contador attack. Notable: Voigt and his Saxo Bank teammates requested a switch to SRAM RED one year ago.
