With the timing of all of this, if there are two-year bans handed out in a week or two to the implicated riders, that would mean banned riders would miss this tour, AND possibly the next TWO, since their ban would likely last until mid-July of 2008 (after the start of the tour), unless they delayed the start of the race that year.

That means the whole face of the Tour (and the other Grand Tours / Classics!) has changed through 2009! That seems like a LONG ways off!

What does this mean? Hopefully, an infusion of new talent that otherwise wouldn't have gotten a chance. But also, it will likely mean a thinning of the talent pool, as any rider who is seen as having half a snowball's chance of getting on the podium will be in great demand. Strong teams like Disco and CSC could see their teams broken apart in the next three years.

THIS JUST IN FROM UCI HEAD PAT MQUAID - RIDERS FOUND GUILTY TO BE BANNED FOR 4 YEARS, NOT TWO!!!:

"...in the ProTour if any of these riders are eventually proved guilty, you could virtually say that their career is over. They will not just get the two years of the Wada code, they will also get two years extra out of the ProTour. So they are facing a four-year sentence out of the sport, that effectively will finish their careers.… "

Thanks for that - I understood that Hamilton, Heras. Millar, etc. were only suspended for TWO years, so there is a new distinction.

Their careers in cycling are over. I don't think that there are many on that list who are under 28/29 years of age.
