Following a ride yesterday, I noticed a “creaking/rubbing” sound when rotating the handlebars. Sounds like it’s coming from headset/steering tube. (Cane Creek IS-2) It is a 2008 Trek 5.2 – never noticed the sound before. So I presume this is simple, but I have become a bit paranoid about wrenching. My bike shop is a 50 mile round trip, so I hope I can get this adjusted on my own. Step by step please. Thanks

Just the cables rubbing in the casings can creak. Put the rear on the largest cog then shift it all the way without turning the cranks this will give you enough slack to lube the cables on the downtube. Repeat this with the FD.
