The previous owner mentioned it was setup for riding on mountain bike trails. Should I switch out stuff if I want to race cross, or should this setup be fine?

Looks like you got a very good deal and it ought to work great for racing. UCI-sanctioned races require drop handlebars, but the vast majority of races out there simply require, for safety reasons, that you not use forward-facing bar-ends.
