My son has a late model road bike with 10-sp 105 group but low end compact FSA crank/rings.

He's wondering if a SRAM Red crank and rings are compatible with Shimano FD and chain.

And this raises a curiosity in me how cross compatible components are between the two brands.

The crank will be fine.

So long as the shifters and derailuers match everything works. I believe the shimano front derailuer works with S(h)ram shifters also.

I have a bike setup with 105 Shifters & derailers with SRAM Force Crank, Cassette and chain.

I have SRAM Red Crank with a Dura Ace chain, Ultegra cassette, and Rival FD. No problems.

The only non-compatibility is between shifters and rear derailleurs. Match those two and mix whatever else you please. In fact we've been curing a 2012 Sram Rival front shifting issue by swapping in 105 front derailleurs. I use a 2013 Red crank with Shimano 9spd chainrings and a KMC chain, craziness!
