That's great! Thanks! I'm data obsessed (in real life and on bikes). A week or so ago I ran out of battery and had a string of road closures for paving. Just went and played around exploring. It was such a great ride, if I could just cut that cord once in a while...

I think we forget that not all data is information.
It's all information... It's not all useful or accurate information. But! Information is a lot like reading. Having it always good. You can choose to use it or not. But if you don't have it, you don't have a choice...

What's sad is that about half of the small audience this story is intended for won't get the joke because they're data obsessed.

I had that pegged as an article one would see on The Onion. Pretty funny.

With that said, I Strava (and now Garmin 520) all my rides, mountain and road. I don't mark them private but none of them will find their way to social media other than what my own followers see on Strava. It's a personal accomplishment thing for me and a great way to track my SUCKS and my TRIUMPHS after starting all this some 3+ years ago after my legs pretty much quit working due a severe neck/spinal issue. It wouldn't kill me to miss the recording of a ride and I wouldn't NOT continue because of it, but I'd be pissed if I missed logging since I've got such a long track record and history documented. I have eliminated some 'followers' in the past that were also facebook friends because every single ride they did would be there on Strava as well as plastered on their facebook page like "Look at ME!!! I'm exercising!! I'm such a HERO!!" Made me puke so I moved on from those types.

the story is funny however I think it's sad that most of the "connected" crowd get some of their self worth or 5 minutes of fame from others that they do not really know and forget how beautiful this world is, people and places.. yep picking up pennies and standing on dollars

Well riding bikes is not for everyone. Lot's of people buy bikes and try it out and then quit and do something else. That's the way of it. That is the first story I have heard about a data junkie quitting over his gadgets.

That's funny. I left home without my bike once and then realized that I hated my Garmin and my smartphone. :D

Seriously, I don't have a Garmin. I do have a smartphone which I use Strava on. On one ride I did, the app crashed and lost my ride. So what, I just manually entered it in Strava.

Big deal. This is just so silly.

Never forgot my Garmin, but I did once forget to put my helmet on. Didn't realize I only had a cap on for several miles.

I feel naked without my helmet. Just like riding without my shorts. :D
