2017 Sea Otter Classic

Derby RC22i Rim

Derby had its new RC22i rim on display at Sea Otter. The 32mm deep rim is available with a brake track, as shown, or without for disc brake users.

Ray "Derby" Scruggs, the owner/designer/manager of Derby Rims was on the scene at Sea Otter showing off two new carbon fiber road rims. Both build upon the cyclocross/gravel 23i rims that Derby debuted last year. With these rims, Derby now offers a full complement of carbon rims for mountain, road, and just about everything in between.

The RC 22i is designed for rim brake bikes and has a 22mm internal rim width (29mm outer width). The 32mm deep section provides a semi-aero profile.

Derby Internal Width

Internal width on the both the rim and disc brake versions is a healthy 22mm. The hooked bead works with tubed and tubeless tires.

The RD 22i disc rim is also new, using the same profile as the RC 22i but without a braking surface.

Weight for both models is claimed to be 440 grams each, plus or minus 10 grams. Rims retail for $430 each and include a 12mm wide Stan's rim tape and Derby rim stickers. As a comparison, ENVE's slightly deeper 38mm deep 3.4 front rim weighs 390 grams, but sells for close to $1,000 each. Chinese options also exist that may save both weight and money, but there is a peace of mind that comes with dealing with an American company that backs the product.

Derby RC and RD22i Rims

The new RC and RD22i rims sell for $430 each.

Both the RC 22i and RD 22i use a hooked bead, making them compatible with tubed clincher tires and tubeless ready tires. Scruggs explained that the rim bed cross section is a modified UST profile but still features a bead seat retention ridge in the rim's channel. This provides secure tire retention even at the higher pressures of road. Scruggs recommends the new road rims for pressures ranging from 45 to 120 psi, mentioning in the process that the new rims are also great for gravel use. If lower pressures are needed, it's better to get a set of Derby's hookless bead cyclocross/gravel rim, the 23i.

Derby Ray Scruggs

The man behind Derby rims, literally and figuratively, is Ray Scruggs, a genial and knowledgeable character.

The RC 22i is offered in 20, 24, 28, and 32 hole. The RD 22i is available in 24 and 28 hole. All are available now via www.derbyrims.com.
