I hadn't seen this posted and heard about it yesterday from my Dad who lives in the same county. I ride in that area when I go up and visit.

Here is the link to the story.

[email protected], just [email protected], what was going through that moron's head?
i didn't read your entire post the first time I just clicked on the link so when I posted I didn't realize I wrote similar to what you said. First thing that came to mind.

It brought to mind another local NC rider killed in October. check out Justice for Dave Sherman facebook. The woman who killed him said she thought she had hit a deer.

Wow, and I just took part in a silence ride for cyclists killed while riding on Wednesday.

This is not good news. NC has the most paved roads (by miles) of any U.S. state, right? They need to add shoulders on way more of them.

I ride in NC daily and definitely love the cycling terrain, but not the drivers. Far more are aggressive and dangerous than sharing or even, oh my, courteous. It can be scary some days.

On Friday I was out riding with a friend and turned to say something to him, riding single file behind me. Fifty meters later was a stop sign. Two cars had just passed us, speeding to get to a stop, something that just makes me shake my head. The angry, bitter, wacko dude in the second car, a Jeep, rolls down his window and starts screaming at us, calling us ****, queers, pussies and tells us he's going to kill us...all because he thought I had said something to him. Of course, I was just talking to my friend.

Amazing how some people act towards others. It can really depress me and make me want to trade in my bike for something like swimming, where there aren't any whacked out, angry, crazy drivers.

Best wishes to those injured in this incident.

And, of course, there's an anti-cycling moron spouting off in the Comments section of the story, as there always is. Sigh.

Bullsh*t. She didn't think she hit a deer, she said she thought she hit a dear. I live less than 2 miles from where that happened and was finishing a ride past there not 10 minutes after she hit him-there was an ambulance there and about 15 troopers passed me on the way to the scene. It was a clear day, sun wasn't in her eyes, and she crossed the centerline and hit him head on, then did a 180 and fled the scene.

About 4 or 5 years ago I got hit by a pickup truck's rearview mirror when he was traveling about 50 mph. Hurt like the dickens and I'm not sure how it didn't knock me off the road. Two and a half years ago, about 3 minutes from home, some old fool in a Caravan turned left across traffic in front of me into a driveway-I was doing 24 mph and t-boned him, resulting in a separated shoulder. And Greensboro made Bicycling's top 50 bike friendly cities...sure am glad I don't live somewhere bike unfriendly.

I always find it strange, yet somewhat predictable, that some tool would jump on the taxes versus right to ride issue as if riding a bike should require an additional fee. IMO such arguments are really about someone delaying their drive by 3 or 4 seconds.

...as if cyclists don't also pay taxes, drive cars, etc. many of those cyclists likely pay more taxes than the driver. weakazz argument

Wait a minute!

Wait a minute before we string up the kid from the nearest tree.

What happened is terrible. I've ridden that same stretch of road and know the sight lines. No way the kid should have not seen the cyclists.

The simple fact is that the kid wasn't looking, hit the cyclists, and then panicked and took off.

BUT, he went home and told his mama. And mama took him straight to the police station. The kid didn't hide and make up a story. Mama did the right thing taking him in right away, and he was released into the custody of his parents. The kid and his family and relatives are devastated by the whole thing. The people he hit are hurt bad; they'll heal and collect from the insurance settlements. And they'll ride another day.

What else should have happened? The kid should be cuffed, and do the perp walk for the papers to take pictures of? Held without bond? Charged with attempted murder? That ain't justice people, that's revenge.

Chill, and let these people work it out.

Utter and complete rubbish. I suspect you have never seen a rider hit by a car. I have.
And let me tell you that they do not just heal and collect from the insurance to ride another day. On the contrary, their lives are changed forever. Here's a link. Start reading at the bottom and see how far you can make it before getting really sick and angry.

Yes.

Held without bond?
Definitely.

Charged with attemted murder?
Absolutely.

Wrong again, that would actually be justice for a change.

hey seeborough - I happen to agree with fupchurch in principle - try to remember that we all make mistakes. Things tend to come full circle, and I hope you are extended the same grace when you screw up. It will not help cyclist causes if we all start carrying concealed and shoot the next driver who can't drive. I live in Florida, I can't carry that much ammo. Tom.
