It's not a dumb question actually. Most people don't wear underwear, because of the seams and chafing. However, some people do. It's really a personal preference.
That and they can easily get soaked, not breath very well, won't move WITH you like lycra, etc. A long time ago, I wore boxers on a 100 degree day with nearly 100% humidity and went on a ride on my mountain bike. I was sore in places I didn't know existed!

...but yeah, I don't think you'll find many (any?) serious riders who still wear undies. The chafing alone is probably the #1 reason why we don't wear undies. A good chamois will save your hind quarters.

I just got back riding for the first time with my Canari briefs (this is also my second time rdiing with bike shoes and clip-less pedals). The briefs felt nice to start off, but towards the end my n*&s started to get a little sore, but nothing I would call severe.

Could my briefs be too tight and make it harder to ride? Im sic foot 168 lbs so I obviously don't have tree trunk legs. It felt like it was harder to ride. Perhaps I was just tired, or the pedals are making me use more muscles.

Any thoughts?

(still new to road bikes, I have a little over 100 miles on my bike...rode 37 miles today, longest ever for me)

No I doubt it was because they were too tight. It's likely your body needing time to get used to your saddle and the whole road bike thing.
If you said it was bad pain or that you've got more miles under your belt I would have said it's saddle 'problem" but for a new rider to only get 'a little sore' after 37 miles and having only done 100 total you're actually doing better than could be expected.
Even some real experienced guys who have a perfect set up need a little time after a winter off so for now I would just give it a little time.

Don't accept any real pain because some goof ball on the internet said to give it time but a little discomfort is par for the couse when starting out so I don't think you have anything to worry about for now from the sounds of it.

I'd guess it's a combination of the tight briefs, your newness to the sport and the length of the ride. I suggest going for a padded cycling short rather than this layering method needed with the briefs.

Get the shorts, build slowly in duration of rides and let your body tell you when it's time to stay out longer. At this juncture, IMO you're better off going for two 20 mile rides in two days than pushing one 37 mile ride in one.

Is there a reason you don't just buy a pair of road shorts?

Either way your issue is probably just your butt getting used to the saddle. I don't remember reading anything about bike fitting. You should read up on bike fit and make sure your bike is setup correctly. If you still have problems most bike shops offer all kinds of fancy ways to zero in your fit for a fee.
