Filmed by our friend and campmate Olivier Bonin over four years, the project documents the event and accurately tracks it's transition from Baker Beach to Black Rock Desert. My first year, 96, was a pivotal one in the event's history. It was the last year of true cacophony and anarachy - open carrying assault rifles and the drive-by shooting range, unregulated driving, no fences, Hellco, Caca Bell, and the event's first deaths. It's softening as it ages, and Olivier's film details that very well.

The primary interviewees are folks from our camp Illumination Village. And, in this preview, Miss K (Mrs. Thinkcooper) is at 4:34.

While I've got your attention, this weekend, at Angel Island in SF Bay, the Serpent Mother (featured prominently in Olivier's film and the preview above) is being assembled for an exhibit. Here's a time lapse of Day 2:

I can't help but thinking that this place would be a lot less interesting without you in it, Coop. Thanks for that.

Burning Man showed me I'd gotten old...

I live in Reno, and everybody who goes to Burning Man from California goes through here. There are strings of weird cars and all kinds of floats and crap drifting through town for days beforehand, then they come back headed home covered with dirt and sunburn.
I used to watch them and think, "Oh, MAN, I wish I could get time off to go out there." Now I watch them and think, "Thank God I'm not going to be out there in the dust."
Lot of nekkid hippie women, though, if you like that sort of thing.

Very cool.

It made me think of the movie (warning: 11.5 MB mpeg) my wife's experiment made of assembling their relativistic heavy ion detector. The whole thing is about 10 meters tall and weighs a bit more than 4000 tons. The assembly time-lapse starts at about 1:10
