For the past couple weeks I've been investigating used road bikes on Ebay and I have begun to notice that most if not all of the bidders have a name that is similar to one another. If you take a quick look on Ebay you find that all bidders have a username that begins with a letter or a number, followed by two asterisks, then another number or letter. (9**b, y**u, p**1, etc.) Does anyone happen to know what this means? They seem to like to just bid and it gets quite frustrating.

Ebay no longer (and haven't for a while) disclose the full user name of bidders, just the first and last characters seperated by - wait for it - two asterisks. Not rocket science to figure that out.

Yea they had issues with bidders contacting each other and figuring out what the other was willing to pay so they can lowball the seller
