If you know you are going out on a group ride with some people who ride a little faster then you and its a short ride with some possible sprints does it make sens to eat a power gel or something to give you some extra energy?

There's no "extra energy"- it'll only help if your blood sugar is low during the ride. For a short ride it's better to time your meals so that you can finish the ride with something left "in the tank". But if the ride is going to be hard, you also don't want a lot of food being digested. That'll take blood away from other places like your legs.
