I am seeing some pics of pros in particularly nasty stages in which they
seem to have dark circles under their eys and occasionally elsewhere.
Kind of horrifying, or disconcerting. Medically, what is happening?

Too much sun?

Too much EPO?

Needing their homologous blood transfusion?

Some of that could be due to allergies. Since I doubt they can take anything medical wise to prevent reactions from whatever they come in contact with in the fields etc. It could be just a normal reaction mixed with exhaustion.

Riding around 100 miles per day, for 21 days in hard terrain around the country of Italy tends to take it out of you. I have also heard that a lot of pros have a hard time sleeping because of the wear and tear as well, so add in exhaustion, hard work, and a bunch of other stuff, then you're going to look like crap.

Check out pictures of Giro or Tour riders when they start the race, and when it ends.
