Sad news... I always hate to hear about someone being hurt or killed while doing what I also do. A 300km brevet shouldn't end like this.

Retired University of Florida professor Gustavo A. Antonini (66) and his stepson William W. Cupples (42) were killed on Saturday morning near Gainesville, Florida after being hit by a pickup truck. The accident happened as they were starting out a 190 mile ride organised by the Gainesville Cycling Club. They were riding in the bike lane on State Road 45, just north of NW 46th Avenue near High Springs, when a 1979 Chevy pickup truck traveling in the same direction moved into the bike lane and killed them.

As you can see, the place where they were riding had a shoulder. Hopefully this idiot will spend a very long time in prison.

I actually was going to do the brevet but my g/f wanted to go night riding that night and I didn't think I would want to go mtb'ing after a 190 mile road ride.

This happens is the areas surrounding Gainesville on a relatively frequent (once every 2-3 years) basis. This is because we have loads of people who ride and the weather is wonderful. I actually don't think the drivers here are any worse than elsewhere. I wouldn't trade my location, but it's sad when these things happen.

Intoxicated Driver

The driver of the pickup was suspected of being intoxicated and has a history of pot arrests. He had a blood sample taken at the scene by Florida Highway Patrol and charges may be forthcoming pending the results.

Hey Mr. S, are you still around on campus? I still am interested in those Deltas if you still have them. Let me know when you are around and I can drop by your office.

Thanks.
