My experience has been that the closer you get the outer FD cage to the teeth of the big ring, the better the control of shifting, particularly from a "shifting off the chain rings" standpoint. I adjust FD so that they just clear the big ring. YMMVshould be parallel to the chainrings and 2-3mm above the top of the teeth on the big ring.
