Im in the market for a new road bike.
I bought my Trek Fuel mountain bike about a year ago but seems as if i ride paved trails 90% of the time.
With that in mind im looking to buy a cheap road bike. Im looking to spend about $300 or so.
Ive been looking at a ton of bikes online and have many in my price range.
Im a "clydesdale" from what ive been reading on here so i need something to support my size. Im 6'1" 260lbs but losing weight fairly rapidly due to biking nearly everyday.
Will i be able to find something decent for $300 or am i wasting my money ?

Maybe buy some slick tires for the bike you have.

I didnt even know that was an option ?
Are there different handle bar options that i could swap to more like the drop down style?

Nashbar has these aero clip-ons, though more of a touring variety. I found pictures of a set on an MTB when another poster brought them up. WTB, continental, michelin, maxxis and others make slick, narrow tires in 26" sizes. Maybe you could use the $300 toward a second wheelset to dedicate for trail use.

After thinking about it, I will most likely get some slick tires and stay on my Trek. Ill look into the handle bars you suggested.

pardon the triple post. I'd feel remiss about suggesting a road bike to you only becasue you know what a good bike is and what it should feel like. It's hard to go to something below that standard afterward. the handlebars are a preference thing really just to add hand positions. If bar ends work for you that's great as well. I just think it would be a pain to change tires and tubes for the riding you felt up to that day. You could get a lower geared cassette as well. i'm a bit of a n00b so take my suggestions with a grain of salt.

I doubt I will get a second set of wheels, at least not yet. I actually rode dirt a couple days ago for the first time in about 6 months and broke off my rear derailleur hanger, which made me enjoy the pavement even that much more...lol
Ill probably just replace the original tires with some slick ones and leave them on.

Any other suggestions on making my mtn bike more road worthy ?
