I am planning to build a flat bar road bike for recreational riding. I am very familiar with mountain bike components and have built several such bikes. However, I have never worked with road bike hardware. I would like to build up a lightweight road frame with 700C wheels, a carbon flat handlebar, and a road double crankset. I am considering a nine speed build because I have a few MTB components that I may be able to use. With that in mind, I have a few questions about drivetrain compatibility of road vs. mtb components:

  1. Can I use 9 speed MTB trigger shifters (e.g. SRAM X9 or Shimano XT) with a nine speed road cassette and a road double crankset?
  2. Will a road rear derailleur work with MTB shifters?
  3. Can I use an MTB rear derailleur with a road cassette?
  4. Will MTB linear pull brakes work on a 700C frame -- or are the brake lever arm lengths different between road and MTB rim brakes?
  5. Will a road front derailleur work with MTB shifters and a road crankset?

Thanks for any guidance you can provide.
