1) The key to training is consistency- either ride in the rain or get a trainer
2) A group ride is ok for an occasional hard day, but it's also good to do some organized interval training. My usual plan is to use a group ride as an occasional substitute for a high intensity interval day. Most of my riding is solo, though.
