If a company replaces a broken frame do they do it with NOS framesets? Specifically would Trek replace a 1986 Aluminum frame in 2000 with an old stock one, or with a new. modern version?

Modern, possibly last year's.

But if stuff is incompatible (front mech?) thet's your problem.

I had a customer who bought a Trek 1200 a few years ago. It had an annoying clicking noise, faint but loud enough to drive you up the wall. The mechanic tried everything, different BB, wheels stem etc to no avail. Sent it back to Trek, who found that the Down tube hadn't been cut properly where it entered the BB shell so it was just kissin the BB unit! No 1200 frames about so he got a 2300 frameset! He didn't mind stumping up £80 to swap it over plus the stem & front mech as the frame was what he wanted originally!
