Just seen this: http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2008/jun/12/17.15pmbst
Anybody got any other news sources for this?

The International Cycling Union (UCI) today suspended the French Cycling Federation (FFC) for the rest of this year and fined it 10,000 Swiss francs (£5,000) for showing "a lack of loyalty".

The FFC paid the price for its support of the privately-owned Amauray Sports Organisation (ASO) - organisers of the Tour de France and March's controversial Paris-Nice race, which the FFC supported but was not endorsed by the UCI. The union has accused the ASO of trying to set up a rival governing body.

During the suspension period, FFC officials are banned from taking part in the UCI Congress and excluded from UCI business. However, the sanction will not affect French riders, who will be allowed to compete in all international events, including this summer's Olympic Games in Beijing.

"The UCI president [Pat McQuaid] rebuked the FFC for a lack of loyalty to the UCI and its members and for having breached UCI statutes and regulations by actively and openly supporting the organisation, outside the UCI framework, of the last edition of the Paris-Nice, an event organised by ASO," said the UCI.

McQuaid added that the punishment was "a strong decision that demonstrates that the UCI will not tolerate one of its members flouting international cycling regulations".

The UCI sanctions do not mention the Tour de France, which is scheduled to start on July 5. The ASO announced earlier this month that the Tour de France would be organised under the aegis of the FFC.

Well, if you connect the proverbial dots, in this particular case capitalized letters, you get the idea. I hope.

Meaningless gesture?
Exactly. The UCI just keep making its hand weaker and digging the hole deeper.

While the Protour was pitched as a way to insure sponsors teams would get into all the big races, something most of us would agree to. What was glossed over was the real goal was to strip the big races of their ability to sell TV rights individually and transfer this authority to a signal entity, controlled by Hein Verburggen. Same deal as F1.

McQuaid has admitted they have lost multiple battles, but all these meaningless gestures do is further ratify the impotence of the UCI.

Yep. Every time McQuaid opens his mouth he weakens the UCI's hand.
