Hello All
I am hoping to get some feedback on gearing. I am a clydesdale + and currently riding a double 12x27. My perception is that I cannot seem to find the right gear when riding behind friends. It seems I am in my highest gear which gets tiring or spinning to much dropping off and getting tired. Would there be any advantage going to a triple 12x25 where I get more gears in the middle? How much difference would it make when trying to climb hills as opposed to a 12x27. Any feedback or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Apparently you haven't looked at the cogs in each cassette. Regardless of 9 or 10 speed, they're caogs in these cassettes arel the same except for the last two. The 12-25 has a 23-25 and the 12-27 has a 24-27.

The reason I fall behind younger/fitter riders is I don't have enough power.

If you've got a 9-speed drivetain, you're missing the 16T, which can suck in certain circumstances. The solution to that is 10-speed. You could also consider a cassette that starts with a 13T to get a 16T, if you've got 9 speed.

Check out Sheldon Browns's gear calculator. http://www.sheldonbrown.com/gears It is useful for comparing different gearing setups.

But it sounds like your problem may be mostly due to lack of fitness and using too high a gear. Grinding along at low rpms tires the legs quickly. Try using lower gears and spinning faster. It takes most people quite a lot of miles to develop a supple fast spin but the more you work at it the better you'll get.

If your current setup doens't have gears that are low enough for the hills you ride, then a triple or a compact crank (assuming thats not what you have now) can be a way to get those low gears.

You're half way to a triple - you've realized the need.

I don't think the others notice the 'double' and 'triple' in your first post. I didn't the first time I read it.

Your current 39x27 is about the same as a 30x21 on the triple. The 12/25 with a 3x would give you lower gears than you have now but (as C-40 pointed out) would only decrease the gap to the two largest cogs. A 12/23 would still give you a lower gear than you currently have as well as minimal gaps across the range - including an 18. Most consider the 18 a 'flatlander gear', but then I'm a flatlander and miss it on my bikes without it.

12/23= 12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,21,23
12/25= 12,13,14,15,16,17,19,21,23,25
12/27= 12,13,14,15,16,17,19,21,24,27

Other options include something as radical as:

13/25= 13,14,15,16,17,18,19,21,23,25
14/25= 14,15,16,17,18,19,20,21,23,25
15/25= 15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23,25
16/27= 16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23,25,27. (I've never even seen a 20 or 22.)

It also could be that you do not need the 53 on the front and are a candidate for a compact???

There are a lot of options and only you can determine what gears you need and how to get those gears in the most convenient package for the way you ride.

Also, as other have said, it ain't magic. You still have to have the power to stay.

If you need a triple for hills, that's fine. In the situation you mentioned, it won't help you a bit.
