The BMC Racing Team will field a squad for the Giro della Toscana Sunday that is filled with riders headed for the Giro d'Italia, but who are focused on helping Mauro Santambrogio improve on his runner-up finish at this race last year.
Santambrogio was narrowly beaten to the finish line by Daniel Martin a year ago, which has provided him with extra motivation for the 196-kilometer race, BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Max Sciandri said. "Mauro texted me right after Liège-Bastogne-Liège last Sunday to tell me how badly he wants to win this year," Sciandri said. "I think all the guys have the same feeling. It may be their last race before the Giro, but it's not a training ride. Alessandro Ballan, who will be making his first Giro start, said he has been resting since helping the BMC Racing Team win the team time trial at the Giro del Trentino last week. "I have already done about 30 days of races this season, so I will need to see if my condition holds," the former world road champion said. "I hope my body will have fully recovered for the Giro d'Italia and that strong condition will still be there."
