I'm wondering about compatibility issues...

running Shimano 600 drive train (STI)
are the shifters capable of going from double to tripple like campy?

will this impact my rear derailuer?

I recently got a new bike and am passing my old on to my dad. Although i like my 53/39, 12-21 combo, he lives in a hilly place and would be walking the bike a lot.

You need to know how many cogs (rear sprokets) the right shifter is designed to handle. Shimano 600 9-speed STI shifters are Ultegra quality but slightly smaller for people with smaller hands. If you shift all of the cable out of the shifter the brake handle should then shift 8 times while reeling in the cable if it is a 9-speed. Shimano 600/Ultegra 9-speed shifters are double/triple compatible.
