There are still a lot of problems and weaknesses with this, but they do respond to suggestions, so if you see errors, send your comments and get them fixed. It appears they may have fixed a fundamental flaw in their original algorithm, which often routed road cyclists on dirt roads.
- No way to tell it to avoid dedicated bike trails
- No way to tell it to avoid roads with bike lanes (particularly those adjacent to parked car doors)
- Does not distinguish between paved/gravel/sand/dirt roads. Ideally road segments should be rated (by users) for suitability (and perhaps even delineated by road/mtb, or fast rider/slow rider). I've stopped using it because of it routing me on to sand or gravel roads.
- Does not avoid major or minor road construction or road closures.
- Cannot download a route to my GPS (Garmin 705), at least as far as I could find. Send/GPS only sends the destination point.
Two major weaknesses: 1) if you don't know the area, it can easily put you on gravel roads and 2) you can't save a map created with the Bicycling option selected.
