This statement by a federal official seems to go against Democracy.

Walters said the federal government will stand with local officials to oppose the initiative.
How can the federal govenment legally oppose any local initiative? It's up to the citizens to decide whether each individual is for or against it, not for the government to pressure citizens in how to vote.

The Federal Government has been doing that for a long time. All part of the ages old states rights vs federal gov't power struggle scenario.
