Gravel bike with road tires?

2566 Views 51 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  fiziks
Unlike some of my friends, my wife is not going to put up with a garage full of bikes. My road bike is aluminum, and I'd like to upgrade to carbon and higher end groupset. I'd also like to get into gravel. Anyone get a gravel bike and have two sets of wheels, one for road and one for gravel? I'm looking at a carbon bike with GRX800 2x12.

The benefit realizations of gravel will be determined by the individual. For me, a huge plus (aside from allowing larger tires) is that mine accepts a front rack and has bosses for a third water bottle cage, it's my light tourer. I feel like I don't need much else than it and my touring bike. I still want other bikes though but if I could only have two those would be it. Someone else will feel differently.

An n+1 killer? Nooooooooooo!!!!
Of course not. One should never own odd number of bikes.

That's not true. If you now have an even number of bikes, it is OK to own an odd number of bikes. Or are you advocating n+2?
Looks like its gonna be this... Waheela C But my wife wants me to get rid of some bikes before I get it.

I think you need to explain to your wife that marriage requires give and take. She gives you permission to get the Waheela and you take her up on it. You are welcome

I will remember that! 😁
don't forget to duck
Many years back on RBR there was a guy you posted about entering a raffle to win a bike he really wanted. He didn’t win so he bought the same bike and told his wife he had won it. Not sure if that story was true but it was either a brilliant or tremendously flawed approach, depending on if the wife found out

Are you sure it was me? I don't remember that. Not anyone I know personally.
If so, maybe a story I found online. But it is brilliant.

No problem.
I just recently bought a bike. This would've been a good tactic to employ!

I have a vague recollection of hearing something like that. I don't think I'd try that with my wife. She's too smart for that. Or maybe I'm not smart enough to keep up the lie. Probably both. Doesn't matter. We discussed the reasons WHY I want the bike and why I can't get that from my current bike and she approved. For all I know, she is reading this right now . Now I just have to pull the trigger...

Never deceive your wife, that never ends well. But, if you have the green light, buy! I bought a gravel bike last summer and I am glad I did. It opened up some new riding and is not as slow on the road as I expected. The one thing I did learn is that my off-road bike handling skills suck. I crashed 5 times last year on the gravel bike, mostly due to deep sand. Meanwhile I haven't crashed on a road bike since 1994

Can you put larger tires than it has on it?

Yes. It came with 37's. I think I can fit 45's which I plan to do. I assume that will help at least some
The Waheela fits 52's, or up to 57 in a 650b, I think. It comes with 38s. I'm getting a second wheelset with 30s for road riding.

Go big or go home.

If sands been the issue all the floatation you can get should help lots. Big smoothies or knobblies?

Why not try the big tires on the road first, before running out and getting another set of wheels? 29″ x 2.2″ (700C x 55) Antelope Hill TC Tire – Rene Herse Cycles is claimed to ride well on the road.

I've got a Sonder Camino. Carbon road wheels with 30mm slicks, then 27.5x2" wheel set. Have the rotors and cassettes spaced correctly so a wheel change is 2 minutes. I love it. I don't do big road bike days, but am fine for 3-4 hours.

I highly recommend it!
