WTH is up with those Land Rider infomercials? I can't seem to turn on the TV without tripping over one lately. Augh.

I know zilch about it's 'auto-shift' system, but I deeply suspect it sucks. Can anyone techy debunk this thing for me, or does it actually not suck?

The sad part is that I have a gfriend who honestly can't seem to 'get' gears and shifting to save her life. So she might eventually be won over by this thing, unless I know more about it. If it's okay somehow, then fine.

Anyone who finds shifting too difficult to "get" probably should not even be allowed a drivers license. NTTIAWWT, of course.

Reading the FAQ, it measures wheel angular speed, and as that number drops it shifts down.....sounds like a clever mechanism-that-like early automatic systems on cars-were/are/is prone to break down.....

... the best way to avoid the Landrider commercials is to turn off the TV and hit the open road!!!

That said, the autoshift is a reasonable concept... for the very small part of the population (some folks may have disabilities) that would otherwise have difficulty operating modern shift systems so I can't completely debunk the system! It uses a flyweight and belt drive to actuate the rear der... and in theory, makes sense... in theory.

I've test ridden them and they work as advertised for the most part, however, the shift points might not have been where I'd a liked them... and it shifts automatically in places where I might have preferred to remain in a harder gear.

Also, while the flyweight is small... it is rotating weight (albeit, with virtually no angular component).

The frame and rest of the components seem typical Mart bike quality.

You're right... there are gonna be a few folks who will see the informercial and think it's the greatest thing since sliced white bread, the light bulb or the inter tainment net (PT Barnum had a saying) which appears to be their target demographic (not to edjumakated on current state of the art in bicycle shifting (Hell, I've got a Nexus equipped Cafe Bike that's arguably tons better machine than a landrider for a couple hundred more than their advertised price)).

Damn!!! Now I've got their theme music stuck in my head!!!

does anyone know where the infomercials are filmed?

I want to live there.
... one of the scene appears to have been filmed in Cedarville, OH (testimonial from the local police)... if U want to live there, heaven help where U are now!

Ok, to be fair, there's nothing overtly wrong wit Cedarville (there, now can I safely use the bike trails and back roads without fear of getting T boned by a combine?)

I don't know about the part where they're talking to those officers, but the rest of it looks beautiful - paths, water, etc, etc.
... well, there is a creek and a small pond near the center of town... and I suspect that if you squint real tight... and don't look to the left or right... yeah, it could be Cedarville!!!

She doesn't have a driver's license. She's visually impaired, just enough so that no DL for her (but not so bad that she can't see cars coming while biking).

Not that everyone who drives a car has experience with stick these days anyway. I myself have only ever driven a manual transmission on a tractor (and my bike, of course).
