The revamped Lombardi Sports Elite Cycling team is pleased to present its 2009 roster & new sponsor group. The team is a revised bigger & stronger overall U23 Elite / Masters squad formerly under the GS Lombardi Sports title. Team Director Bill Howard, along with equipment head Mark
Altamirano, Elite and U23 captain Jesse Mendonca along with Masters captain Robert Winder head up a bolstered squad of young U23 talent & seasoned Elite & Masters riders.

The squad numbers 26 riders for the '09 season, of which 9 riders are new to the team. The U23 squad is highlighted by Junior National Road Champion Evan Huffman. DS Bill Howard calls Huffman a "true phenom", a real natural on the bike having started the '08 season as a category 4 rider begging for a spot on the team…to National Road Champ and National Team member by seasons end. "He is clearly on the way to the Professional ranks, if not this season then by 2010 at the latest".

Along with Huffman, local track star and road sprinter Benjamin Barsi-Rhyne gives theteam fire power in flat fast criteriums. The Elite squad is headed by current National Points Race Champion and Northern California/Nevada Elite Criterium Champion Jesse Mendonca.

Howard states "Jesse is the core of the team. His experience and talent is instrumental in driving the U23 riders to new levels, as well as grabbing key results individually as well". The Elite Team is rounded out by Jim Miller (former Helens rider and 3yr team member), former pro & longtime Lombardi's rider Colby Farrell, and former BPG rider Sean McBride.

The team on an overall basis will focus on Northern California road events with special focus on the District Championships (both Elite & Masters) as well as the team's flagship event, the Giro Di San Francisco. On a National level, the team will target both Elite & Masters Nationals with emphasis on the Road & Criterium events. Additionally the team will send squads to key national events such as the Redlands Classis in Southern California, Superweek in Wisconsin, the Cascade Classic in Oregon, along with several other high profile races and targeted NRC events.

DS, Bill Howard states, "We are extremely pleased to announce our new title sponsor HDR Inc. and new bike sponsor Pinarello. "Without HDR and Pinarello's support we could not continue with our tradition of nurturing young riders to new levels in our sport. Supporting sponsors Management Recruiters of Berkeley, Gourmet & More, Louis Garneau and Schwalbe Tires are returning for '09 as well.

"Of course our long-time core overall sponsor Lombardi Sports is at the heart of the program, "We
need to continue the Lombardi's history & tradition of supporting an Elite Amateur program, with special focus on the development of young talent out of the depth of the Northern California racing pool. "We have a proven track record of taking U23 riders & developing them onto the national team & domestic pro teams respectively, and 2009 looks stronger than ever."
