After letting my Trek 1000 (2004 model) sit idle for 4 weeks, i find i almost can't turn the handlebars without a lot of effort and terrible noise.
I hear a grinding sound as i turn and at some points it gets stuck and applying a little more force makes a loud CRACK before the handle bar and wheel turn.
I presume water has gotten into teh bearings of the headset.
It's sunday today and the LBS is closed, but can someone inform me of what my choices are for a replacement heasdet?
How much is this going to cost?

It could be rusted, and probably it's also adjusted too tight. Either can ruin a headset.

Depending on type, 40 bucks for the headset maybe, labor unknown. Varies depending on where you live.

I'd suggest taking it apart & inspecting it. If you can't do it take it to your LBS & have them look at it.

If your LBS charges you, get a new LBS.
