I did this event geared last year, and it was definitely a tough one. This year, I'm going to attempt it SSCX. Why not take something hard and make it much worse? :)

Anyway, I'm trying to decide on the best gearing. HBR has plenty of climbing, with most being shorter, steeper pitches. My sweetspot gearing setup for SSCX is usually 39-18, but I will drop to a 16 or 17 in the back for flatter, faster runs.

I really have no interested in changing out my front ring, but do have 16, 17, 18, and 19 tooth rings for the back.

I'm concerned that if I go too big in the back (19 maybe?) that I am going to kill myself on the longer, flatter/downhill sections. However, I don't want to go too small in the back and die on the steeper climbs.

Anyone with SS experience at this event?
