I did this event geared last year, and it was definitely a tough one. This year, I'm going to attempt it SSCX. Why not take something hard and make it much worse?
Anyway, I'm trying to decide on the best gearing. HBR has plenty of climbing, with most being shorter, steeper pitches. My sweetspot gearing setup for SSCX is usually 39-18, but I will drop to a 16 or 17 in the back for flatter, faster runs.
I really have no interested in changing out my front ring, but do have 16, 17, 18, and 19 tooth rings for the back.
I'm concerned that if I go too big in the back (19 maybe?) that I am going to kill myself on the longer, flatter/downhill sections. However, I don't want to go too small in the back and die on the steeper climbs.
Anyone with SS experience at this event?
