i wasn't going to post this 'cause it's gross, but i'm a glutton
for punishment, so here goes -

for those of you who ride the L.A. River Bike trail by Griffith Park
I had just got on the trail at Victory Blvd. yesterday and was
passing the dog park when the most unbelievable stench wafted
up from the river; the hairs in my nose got that weird burning
sensation and i began to gag uncontrollably from the smell.
needless to say it was not pretty, but luckily i was able to aim
for the side of the trail while braking. projectile vomiting is most
assuredly not one of my favourite activities. it was so bad(the
smell, not the vomit, although that wasn't good either) i had to
leave the trail and head into the Park. i was nauseous for most
of the rest of the ride. if it's gonna be like this all summer, i
need to find another flat route with no cars for my interval training.

I think the last time i smelled something so indescribably
bad was when i drove through New Jersey in the 70's...

So what was the smell?
i was thinking that it was a combo of things:

1) stagnant water
2) typical L.A. runoff, including animal/human feces, fertilizer, industrial waste
3) algae
4) two days of 100+ degree heat

you know, add ingredients, stir gently, bake at 100 for two days...

Ah Yes...

I live in a rule very agricultural area, so it would be sort of like riding past a filed that has been infused with fresh pig manure, and to plowed under yet...

I can relate...

I know that smell. I ride that trail every week and we get that stench from time to time. But I'm used to it. I grew up in Japan.
