Since I've never dealt with ss or fixed gear, perhaps some of you can help me.

Can I just remove my multi-geared freewheel and toss on a bmx freewheel? assuming the chainline isn't all screwed up by that? I just got a crazy deal on a lugged, freshly powder coated frame and don't need another geared bike, but am not ready to go fixed. I know I could do the spacer thing on a cassette freehub but kinda want to utilize the older crap I have sitting around...

also, where can I get chainring guards for my triple crank so I can just run the middle ring?

also, how can you tell if a frame takes regular or long reach brakes?

so many questions...

Yes, if you can get the old freewheel off, just screw on a ss fw -- the thread is the same (track cog is same thread, too, so you can try fixed later if you want). If chainline is off (likely), re-space and re-dish.

Don't know why you'd need chainring guards. Just remove the other rings (or just leave 'em there).

To determine brake reach, put a wheel in and measure from center of brakemount hole to middle of rim braking track, then compare with the specs of the brakes you're considering.
