if not marked...

As already noted, the post shold have markings for max. height. If it doesn't then one rule of thumb is that the end of the post should be below the bottom edge of the top tube.

Carbon posts are usually marked at 6-7cm from the end.

Well I recall seeing some pictures of a couple in the thread called "Show us your Taiwan and Chinese..." (something like that).

Too much seatpost = undersized bike. Perhaps that's what the OP is after.

That depends on how much drop you can take, pros ride ridiculously small frames to be able to get the desired drop.
