I saw they have a set/system you can buy from park tool, but is there an easier/cheaper way to clean my chain?

I just put it up on the stand and spin...I then take a brush (like a toothbrush) and spin the chain against it....then take a rag and clean it thoroughly. Re-lube it and wipe off any excess lube.

This is how I clean my mountain bike chain which is has much more gunk than my road bike. My road bike I just use a rag and sometimes a bush.
make sure to also clean the pulley wheels (they get gunk built up on them as well)
For thorough cleaning: get a masterlink. Pop open your chain. Place chain in bottle filled with degreaser. Shake vigorously.

For light cleaning a rag and some ProLink.
degreaser and a toothbrush
Here is another good article by Sheldon Brown on the subject of chain cleaning: http://sheldonbrown.com/chainclean.html

Well, you could do a search, since this topic comes up weekly and has been discussed at some SERIOUS length. Here's what I posted in a currently active thread on the Components forum:

No need for a chain cleaner. Assuming we're talking road riding, use the following technique for successful ProLink or homebrew lube (1 part motor oil to 3-4 parts odorless mineral spirits) application and use:

1 - wipe the chain, cogs, pulleys, and chainrings clean with a rag.
2 - drip on lube while pedaling slowly so that the chain just starts to drip lube. Aim the lube between the side plates and between the bushings and the side plates.
3 - keep pedaling the cranks for a minute or so to loosen all the dirt on the chain and to get full penetration of the lube.
4 - thoroughly wipe the chain, cogs, pulleys, and chainrings clean with a rag.
5 - repeat steps 2-4 if the chain was really dirty

Do this AFTER a ride, as you want to allow time for the solvent to evaporate before you head out on the road. If you do this every 300 miles or so (or when you get caught in the rain or other dirty conditions), you will not get any significant gunky buildup, and you won't have to clean the chain or the cassette. This leaves lube on the inside parts, and wipes it off the outside parts, minimizing dirt pickup.

+1 to Kerry... I realized my time is better spent riding than obsessively cleaning a chain. My time is also worth more than a $30-40 chain...

This. You can also use q-tips if you want to clean fairly thoroughly while it is on the bike.

If cleaning the bike don't forget to wipe off the crankset and the pulleys in the derailleur.
Clean the chain! How old fashioned.

I have not cleaned mine in 18 months and my chains are pristine after thousands of miles. I just use 'Squirt' lube. Google it and read. I do not sell it either.

Search.
For you Shimano kids the $30-$40 chain thing s okay. Us SR 11 folks get to fork over almost $100.00 bucks for a chain. If I have to clean the chain every couple of weeks so I can get 8k-10k miles out of a chain versus 3k miles and not cleaning it as often guess what I am going to do. I currently have 5k miles on this chain and it is not showing any significant signs of wear. To each his own on this I guess.
wow, I'm glad I read this, I never considered the advantage of a clean chain..............
When I clean my bikes I always start with the running gear. I do the chain 1st. I take a rag wet with WD40 or odorless mineral spirits, and wipe the chain down while rotating the cranks. When it's pretty clean I use "home brew" mixed 3 parts odorless min. spirits to 1 part oil. What kind of oil? Pretty much whatever I happen to have on hand. We're not lubing parts on the space shuttle y'know. Motor oil 5W-20 usually, because that's what my car takes. Using an old catsup squeeze bottle, I drizzle it on the chain, aiming for the middle where the rollers are. I apply it pretty heavily. The OMS will dissolve and float the dirt off the chain, then evaporate and leave the oil as a lubricant. Then, while that's drying I'll do the cassette, chain rings and derailleurs. I clean them using the odorless mineral spirits (OMS) without oil. Park's cog cleaning brush is good for doing the cassette. For the chain rings, I just use a rag with OMS sprayed on it and wipe them down while I'm turning the cranks. I do the same to the rear derailleur pulleys and any other parts of the derailleurs or brakes that are grungy. Park's brush is useful here too.

By now the chain is dry enough to wipe down although I like to leave it overnight. I turn the cranks slowly with one hand while the chain runs through a clean rag held by my other hand. I keep turning the cranks, and the rag until no more black residue comes off on the rag.

I clean all the drive train once every 200 - 300 miles, and immediately after every rain ride.

how much do you make?
I bought that park tool thing, get it done in like 5 minutes, and move on. I only ended up buying it because I saw a friend using it. Happy buyer so far.

what do you use as cleaning solvent when you're out of the Park juice?
Rags and WD-40 work fine for me. I wipe the chain down after each ride. Takes a couple a minutes. When chain gets noisy I re-lube with hot Chain-L Lube, 1 drop per link, and wipe clean with a rag. Pretty quick, and pretty simple.
Jet fuel, rag, Prolink.

this stuff sounds like the shiznitt...water-based, no solvents, biodegradable.

gonna give it a try.
