I have a Sigma PC-14 that I got two seasons ago that has been giving funky oddball numbers so far this season. One minute it will say my HR is 78 or something and the next it will say 159, when I have made no change in effort. Also, even when it's giving a believable number (say, 165 at my threshold which I know IS my threshold), it will often get "stuck" on that number even when I make drastic increase or decrease in effort. And finally, a lot of the time it just doesn't give any reading at all.

I have put in fresh batteries, use salty water or spit at the HRMs point of contact with my skin, and I am pretty sure I'm not riding near high voltage power lines when I get these results. Any ideas? Is it just kaput? Is the Sigma PC-14 known for being crap?
