...and when he was about 50ft in front of me, both of his feet dropped all the way down, but I swear it never looked like he unclipped. It almost looked like one of his crank arms released and dropped down even with the other one, and then when he started pedaling again, it just re-connected like normal and off he went.

Am I nuts, or did I see some sort of crank I've never heard of before? :confused:

yes, a miracle. However, In the rare event of a ride lasting more than 4 hours, seek immediate medical help to avoid long-term injury.

Because power crank riders can do 4 asynchronous activities at the same time - pedal the left crank, pedal the right crank, brake with the left hand and shift gears with the right hand! :)
