Somewhere along the way Comcast decided to give away Netgear WRN1000 routers away to their customers over the last few weeks. My customers all of a sudden decided to install them this week and kill their VoIP service with us because the router has an SPI firewall enabled by default. This blocks the private IP from our servers in the registration packet so we don't no where to send the authorization ACK. We get this flood of tickets that say all outbound calls are dropping after 20s! Anyone know what a bunch of cockroaches look like when you turn on the lights? That's what network engineers look like when we think we have a large problem! After calling a couple of customers and finding a pattern and put the pieces together it calmed down around here but it was intense for a little while while checked all sorts of crap to see what would cause this to happen. So in closing, I HATE YOU COMCAST!

Comcast is regularly ranked as the most hated company in america.

A little example from my parents:

They live in an area where the service is horrible. It's only actually on 3/4 of the time. Each time they told my parents that it was the modem. Each time, my parents varified that it was not, in fact the modem. One time it was out so long that it necessitated a tech to come out. While the tech is there, he STEALS their modem (which was functioning just fine) and replaces it with a Comcast modem, which the company proceeds to start charging them $10 a month for. My dad has called Comcast at least 10 times. Each time they provmise to return the modem- it's been about 3 months and they still have not returned the modem. At this point, their only avenue of redress is small claims corut.

I knew they had a bad reputation, but that's just silly.

Interested to see the results of this one. Keep us posted.

We have no complaints with our Comcast Internet service.

Same goes for the cable TV service, with the exception of the Super Bowl in 2009 when someone hacked into the Comcast system and we got to see hard core porn for about 30 seconds after the Cardinals scored their final touchdown. But Comcast issued an apology to its customers and gave us $10 off the next bill, so I can't complain. Actually my only complaint was that the man and woman in the porn were really, really ugly....but that isn't Comcast's fault.

just got rid of comcrap and not looking back (AT&T Uverse)

I got rid of AT&T because they couldn't figure out how to make their own DSL work. I switched to Comcast. I don't love 'em but at least it usually works. Mostly....

From my experience, where you live determines more whether you like cable or DSL. I have lived in areas were one was usually better/more reliable then the other. Right now I have cable internet with comcast, and its basically been 100% reliable since I have lived there. Except for the cable going out once which they already knew about by the time I called. Other places I have lived the cable internet with comcast sucked badly and would go down plenty of times and the modem needed to be reset. But when I switched over to AT&T DSL it was pretty solid. I think it depends on the infrastructure coming to your home and how far away you are from the CO in the case for DSL, and how much they have over sold their lines.

I had Comcast a long while back because I couldn't get DSL (I since have fiber to the CO and can get ridiculously high speeds for cheep). They were OK, but there was a definite slowdown during the evening hours. I don't get that with DSL. Comcast was also really expensive for what you got. Full disclosure--I work for a competing telecom that does DSL and get a huge discount on the service so YMMV. I also use DirecTV so F-you and your high prices Comcast. :)

ATT Uverse is not DSL. Uverse is fiber optic. I got rid of Time Warner for some of the same reasons you guys hate comcast. UVerse has been great!

I've got Time Warner. I preferred ATT Uverse. I feel like I got more channels and paid less with them. I don't even get the Science Channel of Sleuth. wtf?

Are you sure? Guessing it's copper from the trunk to your house. Maybe they double the copper to speed things up a bit, but still a short-term solution that isn't as robust as fiber to the house. Costs a lot less for the company though.

maybe in the backwoods where you live, but here in Texas we play things modern.

glass all the way, baby... they made a big to-do about it at the time.

/ of course I live about 5 blocks from a major (former MCI) switchy hub facility thingy.

Maybe in your neighborhood or new developments, but guessing the majority are still running via copper from the CO to the house.

Comcast wanted $100 to "install" cable at my new house (i.o.w., flip the on switch and leave). Got FiOS hooked up for free. Tough t*tties, Comcast!
