We receive at least one call per day....usually from the "United Firefighters Union of mid Western South" or "State Police" victims of terrible calls and we need money. I figured out that most of these organizations, are legit, however, the fundraising is B-$. These organizations that call get a certain $$ amount. Usually $5000 the org gets and the company making calls get the rest. Please, If you get the call, ask how/what % goes to the supporting cause. I have now cemented the fact that I am an A- Hole....my daughter ran a 5K for Band this weekend....She kicked it!! I would have run as well had it not been for my flip-flops.

That's minor. I no longer do any donations to anything except the causes I choose that I know *might* do some good. I'm sick of all the people wanting money from me for their cause. I especially hate people that do things for their cause, when in fact they just want to be paid to do it. Like recently some people I know ran across America to raise money and bring awareness to people with mental health issues. Truthfully from the posts I saw it was a chance to run across the country and have their pictures taken by the landmarks they passed. The amount of money they did manage to raise will most likely be mis-used or squandered in expenses to keep the charitable business running. Bah humbug.

I only support what I choose, never anything from solicitations. I figure I pay more than enough in forced donation (taxes) for crap organizations.

As for the folks that call... tell them to put me on their no call ist and hang up. If I feel like playing along, I just ask for their phone number so I can call them back when I'm not busy.

Unfortunately, there are lots of dumb people that fall for these scams.
Legitimate organizations don't ask for credit card numbers over the phone.

If one sounds real enough that you'd like to donate, ask them for an address where you can drop off a check.

I have a "No solicitor" sign at my front door. I'm amazed at how many folks still ring the bell and start their pitch. I point to the sign and close the door.

I need to add:
"If you still want to talk, just think of your phone number really hard. I'm psychic and will call you back at my earliest convenience"

This is "Lenny", a series of recorded responses. Some of the telemarketers stay on the line for 10 or 15 minutes. Lenny's youtube channel.

( I do feel sorry for the telemarketer callers. It's a terrible job. )

I never have and never will feel sorry for anyone that disturbs me in my own home to try and make a buck off me.

You're not the most sympathetic guy are you?

I worked at a telemarketing place when I started grad school. I remember this one time the call recipient's name popped up on my screen, "Matt Hoffman". I went through my short script and after he said he wasn't interested I said, "sure, no problem. But I just have to ask, is this the Matt Hoffman who rides bikes?". He said, "well, I ride bikes and I have a Hoffman brand bike. But I'm not THAT Matt Hoffman". We chatted bikes for a bit then ended the call. That was the highlight of that particular job.

That lasted about a month until I found work laying sod.

Nobody says you have to answer your phone. I have [checks phone] ten "contacts" in my phone labeled "cold call." Whenever I get a robocall, or what appears to be one, it gets filed under one of the "cold calls."

Telemarketers are just doing a job. They're not the ones making bank off the calls; their employers are. So I wouldn't be flat-out mean to somebody unless they were being rude first.

I like to act like I am hard of hearing until my wife makes me hang up the phone.

When things are slow, I talk to them, asking all sorts of crazy questions. The best part is that I change accents for every question. First, I use a most honorwble Kung foo samurai accent, den I switches inta mobsta tawk...see?, then, Ello gubnah...a British accent, and then to indian (dot, not feather). Then I hang up.

Frankly, you have to be rude to shake these sales people.

Their strategy is to take advantage of your politeness.

--The "Firefighter's Fund" and "Sheriff's Committee" deals are legit. I "worked for one for either one day or two weeks, depending on how you define "work." This guy sold ads in a "sheriff's dept" booklet for kids -

I got through college by sharing a house with 5 other people, working, and having no car. At graduation, I got a little truck with a $199 note, and so I needed cash flow.

I answered an ad about making money if you had a reliable vehicle.

This guy makes a deal with a sheriff or whoever - he has a mostly pre-made booklet that has all of this kid safety stuff, and dont-use-drugs stuff. The sheriff gets to claim it is from him. The entrepreneur opens a cold-call phone bank, and sells ads to local businesses who think it is the sheriff calling - enough businesses decide to place an ad, for the going rate per quarter page. Sure, its a few bucks but they can help support the sheriff in the dont-do-drugs message for kids. So, the cold-caller phone bankers have to say the call is from the sheriff.

My job was to run out and pick up the art from the business - at least their business card or logo - get the money, and get a one-page contract signed. If I upsold - say from quarter page to half page, I got 50% of the upsale.

Otherwise, I cannot recall what portion of the ad I got for picking it up. The phone seller got maybe 40%, the runner got a bit, and the entrepreneur got the rest.

The guy GAVE me $20 to "cover gas" for the "first couple of runs." I "earned" a few bucks the first day getting a coupe ads. Easy!

Then, I kept calling in, but they had "no ads to get today." For two weeks.

"Payday" came around but the guy was not in, etc. The run-around.

I kept seeing the SAME help-wanted ad in the local paper.

So, I figured out: once he has 3 or 4 sold ads to pick up, he hires a driver and strings you along to pick up the first few ads, on "commission," waiting for "payday."

He gives you $20 out of pocket up front to really sell the idea.

You never get any more work, and you cut your losses since you at least got $20 out of the whole deal. In the meantime, he hires the next dupe. Myself I got hired to deliver pizza literally around the corner from this guy. You could ride your bike that far on a flat tire it was so close.

He eventually publishes like 10,000 of this kids' dont-do-drugs book "from the sheriff," and does distribute them to the local grocery stores and libraries, per contract.

He goes on down the road to the next town.
So I figured out: they would get a fool who would go get a few ads, "front" the $20, and leave you high and dry. You are never going to sue - for what? The $150 he owes you? Too much trouble.

Me too! Take that!

Speaking of assh0les... word is Leary stole that bit from Louis CK.

Leary also stole a bunch of material from the late Bill Hicks. Not a nice (or original) guy.

Love the Lenny videos! Discovered them last year. Had us in stitches and convulsions a few times.

Half tempted to set up a Lenny system on my home phone line, in fact.

just saying 'my eldest daughter, Clarissa..' in that accent can get my wife to laugh instantly
