I know the answer is out there....

I just got this frame (2000 Merlin Extralight) but I don't have a clue as to what the little doohickie on the inside of the right seat stay (about 4" above the rear dropout) is for.

Anybody?

It holds the chain while the rear wheel is removed. It keeps the chain from hanging on the chainstay

Remember when every frame had a chain hanger?
Now many riders don't even know what one is!
No offense, FrankDL, they have virtually disappeared from bikes.

No kidding. I miss 'em every time I chance out a rear. The only frame I have left with a chain hanger is now a fixie - does somewhat less good there.

While maybe not a necessity, they are a nice convenience. I had Moots put one on my, uhm, Moots when they built it up. I dunno why they went out of fashion.

No offense taken. I think it's a real classy addition and a great idea.
Probably fell victim to the bike industry's "bottom line".
