I have a fluid trainer (fixed resistance, no handlebar lever, simple, cheap model) from a popular bike shop/internet retailer. Over the last week, I've noticed that I can push harder gears than a few weeks ago at the same HR in interval training. From my experience on recent road rides, I'm not getting stronger nearly as quickly as the ratios would suggest. The spring load on the roller has remained constant, same tire, same psi, etc. Still gets hot, makes same noise, and does create resistance.
Anyone have any tips on determining whether the resistance unit has failed (or is slowly failing)? A benchmarking method maybe?

Thank you in advance for your replies.

If you want benchmarking, you'd have to have an SRM or Powertap to figure out watts produced at a given cadence in a given gear.

i've never heard of it but perhaps the fluid has leaked out.

does it help with the resistance? i dont' know
but if the radiator doesn't get hot anymore the fluid is probably gone...
