I was looking at my "racing" bike this morning, and realized it's the bike I wanted but couldn't afford when I was 22. It's not really the one I want or need at 44, especially since my racing days are long gone.

The new bike will feature:
- triple crankset
- S&S couplers for travel
- SPD pedals, so I can wear walkable shoes
- probably a steel frame
- handbuilt wheels
- handlebars level with the seat

It will not, however, feature a Brooks saddle. I'm not that old yet. :wink5:

Add tire clearance for cx-width tires so you can explore the forest roads ifn' you get the urge, and you'll have a handy, do-everything bike.

Eyelets? Rack mounts?

And a nice jumpsuit to wear while riding it.

(I have 11 years on you and when I look at my racing bikes I think "thank God I can still enjoy riding those things." I guess I'm going out more slowly than you are. :D )

I don't completly agree with Coolio on the subject however on 2 of my roadies I have swaped the triples for compacts and am fairly pleased with the results.

I like a triple. With a compact I feel like I'm always cross-chained - either I'm in 34x13 and need to shift up, so I have to shift both derailleurs and go all the way across the cassette, or I'm in 50x21 and need to shift down ...

With a 30-42-52 triple, I can use the 42 most of the time and be in the middle of the cassette.

IMHO, YMMV, C F Bb Eb Ab, etc.
